    Description

    Today this unit is; "425th Civil Affairs Battalion, California Army Reserves". 70 years ago, this was the  "425th Military Government Company, California Organized Reserve Corps".
    This guidon was manufactured by the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot before the "Military Gov./Civil Affairs" had a specific branch color, or guidon devices. This would put this at the inception of this California Organized Reserves Company in 1949.

    as well as both 425th C.A./M.G. Co. are from
    the estate of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel W. Cathcart.
    Lieutenant Colonial Cathcart was born July 7th, 1924 in Canute, Oklahoma.
    Inducted from Long Beach, California, he served with "I" Co., 291st Infantry, 75th Infantry Division.
    Duty stations include: Fort Leonard Wool Missouri, Camp Breckinridge Kentucky, England, France, & Belgium.
    Among his awards are the Purple Heart & Silver Star medals.
    He was discharged at Fort MacArthur, California on February, 1946 as a Staff Sergeant.
    He graduated from UCSB in 1949 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant from ROTC.
    He played pro football with the San Francisco 49ers from 1949-1950.
    He was recalled to active duty in 1951.
    He served as chief spec. ser. Letterman A.H.
    He returned to the 49ers from 1952-1953.
    He taught and coached at Santa Barbra High School for 30 years. He retired in 1984.
    He retired from the Army National Guard in 1975 as Commanding Officer of 425th C.A./M.G. Co., Lieutenant Colonel.
    He was inducted into the HALL OF FAME UCSB, SB Athletic Round Table, Long Beach Century Club and Coaches Hall of Fame, CIF.
    He married Susan Curry in 1944. They have 4 children and 9 Grandchildren.

    For your consideration is this U.S. Army Model 1931 guidon. This guidon is for the 425th Military Government Company, Organized Reserve Corps circa 1949.
    This is an Unassigned Branch Unit Guidon manufactured by the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot circa 1949.
    Note:
    This and the other 425th MG Co. guidon are from the same estate.
    Description
    :
    This guidon is a made of cotton bunting with applique lettering & numbers. The cotton bunting is blue in color that has been sun bleached at it fold lines. This was a privately made guidon for the unit after its inception in 1949. Both guidons were purchased together and have been together since 1949.
    Condition
    :
    The guidon is faded from at fold lines. This piece was in a garage for the last 50 years and was bleached by the sun. The material is in otherwise in good condition.
